Chevron affirmed production goals and updated capital spending targets for 2017 and 2018. The company missed an opportunity to set production targets reflective of the current market reality. The plan to cover dividends in 2017 from cash flows remains in doubt. With  Analyst Day  today,  Chevron (NYSE: CVX )  had another opportunity to take a step forward by making production cuts or at least making contingent plans for reducing production. The energy markets are over supplied with product and Goldman Sachs is  warning  that the recent rally has no merits. Chevron though isn't heeding this warning. The first quarter earnings report from Chevron Corporation ( NYSE: CVX     ) again highlights the lack of production growth from the majors. The oil major continues to obtain the majority of its profits from projects around the globe while domestic energy production soars. The results are similar to those produced by ExxonMobil Corporation ( NYSE: XOM     ) , which sits virtually in the middle of the energy explosion in Texas but has widely missed out. n a market constantly claimed to be overvalued, the major oil exploration and production firms provide attractive valuations. Not only are global energy prices at highs, with Brent crude hovering near $110, but several catalysts also exist to keep prices high going forward.
