ChargePoint: Still Priced For Perfection

Image
Update - June 9, 2023 Tesla is now working with both Ford and General Motors on charging stations. ChargePoint appears in a bad spot now with the stock headed for new lows.  -General Motors (NYSE:GM) announced a collaboration with Tesla to integrate the North American Charging Standard connector design into its electric vehicles beginning in 2025. -The collaboration between the legacy Detroit auto powerhouse and Austin electric vehicle giant will expand access to charging for General Motors (GM) EV drivers at 12K Tesla Superchargers. The agreement is said to complement GM's ongoing investments in charging, as well as reinforce the focus on expanding charging access across home, workplace, and public spaces. The charging deal builds on the more than 134K chargers available to GM EV drivers today through the company's Ultium Charge 360 initiative and mobile apps. ChargePoint: Problems Aren't Going Away

ChargePoint continues to spit out large revenue growth from selling EV charging stations at limited positive margins. The subscription revenue base is only ~$85 million despite the company spending over $330 million in annual operating expenses. The stock still has a market cap topping $4 billion while burning all the SPAC cash with substantial cash flow burn each quarter. This idea was discussed in more depth with members of my private investing community, Out Fox The Street.  Learn More »   ChargePoint Holdings  ( NYSE: CHPT ) is still reporting fast revenue growth without much in the way of gross profits. The EV charging space is still too focused on throwing up charging stations without much in the way of actual demand  for usage. My  investment thesis  remains ultra Bearish on the stock at just about any valuation until the business model changes. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha.  Disclosure: No position mentioned. ChargePoint: Still Living On EV Hype

Image
ChargePoint still has an amazing $4.3 billion market cap, despite selling charging stations mostly at cost. The company still has no meaningful gross profit from subscriptions. The stock is far too expensive at 6x FY24 sales, despite the business burning tons of cash each quarter. This idea was discussed in more depth with members of my private investing community, Out Fox The Street.  Learn More »   Even though  ChargePoint Holdings  ( NYSE: CHPT ) is trading closer to the lows now, the stock is still living off EV hype. The stock constantly rallies up to $20 providing a better opportunity for longs to dump shares, but another rally isn't guaranteed as  the quarter ahead will ultimately highlight cash burn concerns. My  investment thesis  remains Bearish on the EV charging station stock. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha.  Disclosure: No position mentioned. ChargePoint: Low Quality Beat

Image
ChargePoint beat FQ2'22 revenue estimates, but the losses are mounting. The company guided up FY22 numbers partly due to acquisitions. The stock still trades at an estimated 21x FY23 number leaving limited upside for the stock and reinforcing why venture funds sold 13.8 million shares. Looking for a portfolio of ideas like this one? Now investors have to confront the valuation divide and deal with the past insider sales likely leading to future sales on any stock rallies. My  investment thesis  remains very Bearish on the EV charging station stock on any rallies into the mid-$20s. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha.  Disclosure: No position mentioned. ChargePoint: Insider Selling Hints At Limited Upside

Image
ChargePoint insiders have filed to sell up to 13.8 million shares. These selling shareholders will still control ~140 million shares after the offering, placing a cap on the stock until more selling is done. The stock remains insanely expensive at 17x FY24 sales targets. Looking for more investing ideas like this one? Get them exclusively at Out Fox The Street.  Learn More » In no huge surprise, insiders are filing to sell shares of  ChargePoint Holdings  ( CHPT ) with the stock up substantially from the IPO and PIPE prices. The timing though is questionable since ChargePoint has recently fallen from the highs and took another 10% hit on the offering news. My  investment thesis  remains very negative on the stock and the EV charging station space due to weak financial results and ramping up competition.
